Warning Signs for Your Car Battery

Updated: Aug 6, 2021

Your car’s battery is one of its vital components. That is to say, if your battery has problems, then your vehicle as a whole will have problems. The key when handling major issues within your car is prevention. When you know the signs of potential disasters, you can avoid them and promote longevity for your car.

Let’s take a look at some common warning signs a car battery could be experiencing issues.

Your Dashboard Will Notify You

One of the simplest ways to know whether or not there is a problem with your car’s battery is to check your dashboard for that pesky warning light. If there is a problem, then a little battery symbol will probably pop up on your dashboard console. This symbol can also indicate issues with other parts of the electrical system. Get it checked as soon as possible.

Your Battery Has Been Around the Block

A car battery usually lasts about four or five years. Some can last longer and some won’t make it that far. A battery’s lifespan is going to depend on how it is treated. Things like extreme temperatures, its frequency of deep discharges, and its ability to undergo full charge cycles will all affect the battery.

So once your battery reaches it’s third or fourth year of existence, get it checked regularly to ensure you aren’t surprised by a failure.

Sights and Sounds to Watch Out For

Have you noticed a foul smell coming from under your hood? Sometimes, when a battery has been frozen or overcharged, it can vent gas. A rotten egg smell should be checked out by a professional in case the battery is leaking.

Another thing to watch out for is a bulging or swollen battery case. Extreme heat or cold can lead to issues within the battery, so keep an eye out for swelling. A swollen battery can lead to a dead battery.

A Sluggish Crank is Not Good

When you go to crank up your car, it should start up pretty quickly. If you notice the crank is a little sluggish, then your battery could be at death’s door. It’s likely, even if you get it cranked this time, it will not start up at all next time. It’s time to head to the mechanic.
