Why are my Headlights Cloudy?

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

Over time many cars experience an issue with cloudy headlights which can be frustrating and in many cases even dangerous.

But why does this happen? Why are some cars more prone to cloudy headlights, and what can you do to fix it?

Let’s look at what causes this problem, as well as some steps you can take to improve the clarity of your car’s headlights.

What Causes the Problem?

Cloudy headlights can be a nuisance, but they can also be a safety concern. The cloudiness of headlights comes from pores in the headlight as a result of damage from the sun. The ultraviolet light the sun emits damages the headlight surface and leaves small pores in the headlight that make the headlight look cloudy or dirty.

Why Does it Matter?

So your headlights are a little bit foggy, what is the big deal? Clouded or foggy headlights can limit your visibility while driving at night, making you more susceptible to an accident. In addition, if your headlights are too cloudy it could result in a ticket. Safety is of utmost importance and clear and bright headlights are essential for safe driving in the dark, for you and for others on the road.

How can I Fix It?

If your headlights are cloudy, not all hope is lost! By using a special polishing tool a service center can buff the tiny pores out of the headlight and restore it to its original state. In addition to buffing several chemicals will be used to polish the headlight. If you like to work on your car yourself when possible, over the counter kits for buffing headlights can be purchased.

If the headlights are cloudy from the inside however, that signals that moisture has gotten into the headlights, and a new headlight assembly will be necessary. If you suspect your headlights are cloudy because of a moisture issue, getting a professional opinion would be a wise idea as you’ll want to prevent further damage.
