Winter Emergency Car Kit

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

Having a Winter emergency kit in the back of your car in case of an unexpected event on the road during the cold season is a wise idea. Unfortunately, you never know if you may run into an issue or have your car break down during bad weather. Let’s look at some things that can come in handy in the event of an emergency.

Car Supplies

Having some car supplies handy in an emergency kit can help should you experience a flat tire, or other minor car problem. Your emergency kit should include:

  1. Car jack

  2. Jumper cables

  3. Ice scraper

  4. Sand or kitty litter

  5. Tire chains in extremely snowy areas

Personal Supplies

In addition to car supplies, your emergency kit should also include some personal supplies you may need in case you become stranded on the side of the road for any period of time. A blanket or two is a must in your emergency kit. Hypothermia can set in very quickly if you become stranded so a blanket can be the difference between life and death.

In addition to blankets, having extra coats in the trunk can be a wise decision. A first aid kit should also be included in your emergency kit just in case anyone becomes injured. Having granola bars or other snacks in your emergency kit is also important, in the event you might be stranded for several hours. And most importantly, have water in the kit too in order to avoid dehydration if stuck for a long period of time.

Preparing your Car

In addition to having a good emergency kit in your trunk, there are some things you should do to prepare your car for driving on the roads during the winter. You should always travel with a full (or nearly full) tank of gas and with tires fully inflated.

If your tires haven’t been checked in some time, having a mechanic check them for wear and tear is a good idea. Newer tires are safer on slick roads, where as, driving on tires with no tread left can lead to disaster. Making sure your windshield wipers are functioning properly before going out for a drive is also advisable.
