Is your car overheating even though it’s ridiculously cold outside? Here’s a look at what could be causing your car to overheat and how to prevent it.
Why is my Car Overheating?
Blockage
Even though winter brings very cold temperatures, it isn’t completely rare to get a day or two of randomly warm weather. Using the cooling system after it has been out of use for a while can bring a blockage in the cooling system to your attention by way of overheating. Mineral deposits can block the radiator, foreign objects can become lodged inside the cooling system, and thermostats can be faulty – all of these issues cause a lack of coolant circulation in the engine, which leads to overheating.
Failed Water Pump
Your car’s water pump is one of the most active components in its cooling system and its main responsibility is to maintain the circulation of coolant. Impellers and bearings inside the water pump can break over time. Once the impeller stops turning, coolant is unable to circulate and the engine’s heat builds up very quickly.
Coolant Thickening
When the outdoor temperatures drop below freezing, coolant can coagulate inside of the engine or radiator. If antifreeze cannot circulate, your engine will overheat. This can cause internal damage if it is not repaired soon after the issue occurs.
What Can I Do to Prevent Overheating?
Some precautions you can take to prevent your car from overheating are:
Tint your windows or use a sun shade.
Park in the shade and out of direct sunlight.
Crack your windows slightly when parking in the sun to allow hot air to escape.
Keep an eye on the engine temperature gauge and turn off the engine to let it cool if you notice it pointing towards “hot.”
Check your coolant level regularly, especially during the warmer months.
Take your vehicle to your local mechanic so they can diagnose the issue and repair any damaged parts.
