You may notice your tire pressure light come on a lot more during the winter months and though this may feel like an inconvenience, it’s important to get it checked out. However, knowing the right pressure to keep your tires at throughout the year may seem more complicated than it has to. Today we’re going to take a look at tire pressure and give you the information you need to know to stay safe through the season.
How Do You Check Your Tire Pressure?
Most people don’t think about the air in their tires until they either see them get low or a warning lights comes up on their dashboard. However, your tires are an important component of your system, so they should be looked at about once a month to ensure they’re performing properly.
To check your tire pressure, you need a tire gauge. This handy little tool can be picked up at gas stations or automotive stores and can be easily stored in your glove box. The nice thing about using a tire gauge is that it will give you an exact reading on your tires so that you can make informed decisions about how to proceed.
How Much Air Should Be in My Tires?
So, you’ve checked your tire’s air pressure with your tire gauge and now you’ve got a number. The question is whether or not that number is too high, too low, or just right. To determine the correct psi or, pounds per square inch of air for your tires, you’ll need to refer to your owner’s manual. There should also be a placard with optimum tire pressure on the inside of your car’s door, glove box, or fuel door. The psi measurement on the sides of your tires is your maximum psi, not your optimal psi.
Filling your tires up to the maximum psi will change the way your tires function. Though you may be able to turn sharper corners with ease, you may also run the risk of losing control of your vehicle. Not only that, but fully inflated tires may wear out faster.
