Common Preventable Car Problems

Updated: Apr 28, 2021

No one has time to be stranded on the side of the road with a broken down car, or for their car to be in the shop for days on end. Many common car problems are easily preventable, with just a little bit of foresight and maintenance. With proper care your car can last you years with very few, if any, issues. What kinds of issues can your car have if you don’t do preventative maintenance on it? Let’s take a closer look at some of those issues.

Dead Battery

Checking your car’s battery periodically to make sure it is still holding a charge at optimal levels can save you a headache and precious time. Average Battery life is Four to Five years. We’ve all experienced a dead battery before, and have asked kind strangers to jump start our car. With periodic battery checks this problem can often be prevented. Your car’s battery can easily be checked at home with the right tools, but if you aren’t comfortable checking it yourself, we at Hillmuth are glad to help!

Flat Tires

It’s true; oftentimes there is nothing you can do to prevent a flat tire, sometimes you run over a nail, or some broken glass in the road. But flat tires are often a result of low air pressure, worn, out of balance, or misalignment. Periodically checking the tread on your tires can let you know when it’s time for new ones, and can signal any alignment issues by uneven wear and tear.

Oil/Oil Filter Changes

Regular oil changes can save you both time and money in the future. Not only can oil changes help your car run more efficiently, they can prolong the life of your car. If your car’s oil isn’t changed frequently enough, it can lead to sludge in your car’s engine, which can ultimately lead to engine failure and a very hefty repair cost. It’s also important to have your car’s oil filter replaced on a regular basis, because they can become less effective over time as they become more dirty.

Leaks

Leaking fluid from your car is never a good thing, and if fluid leaks go unnoticed or unattended damage can be done to your car’s engine, brakes, or transmission. If you notice your car leaking fluid, bring it into the shop to be looked at right away, to prevent any further damage.

Bad Brakes

Not paying attention to worn brake pads can end up costing you in the long run. It is hard to miss the warning signs that your brakes need to be replaced; that squealing or screeching noise is unmistakable. Ignoring your car’s squeaky breaks for too long could wind up costing you additional money in the future, as it could cause your car’s rotors to wear out prematurely.

Car problems never fit into our schedule, and are never convenient, but oftentimes they can be prevented. Keeping a close eye on your car and performing routine maintenance can prevent you from being sidelined in the future and can sometimes save you a significant amount of money. At Hillmuth Auto Care we are here to help with any car problems you may encounter, and our experts will quickly have you back on the road, and back to your life as scheduled.
